We woke up this morning to yet another tragic shooting in the news. This time a group of people were shot and killed during a church prayer meeting in South Carolina. There are no words. Lord have mercy. Tomorrow there will likely be something else. It is easy to develop a fatalistic worldview when things like this happen.
How do you make sense or meaning out of something so senseless?
I don’t know. What I do know is news like this compels me to commit even more to my life-work of discipleship and family on mission.
Our family mission is, “Awakening families to life in God’s grace.” I have to believe that God’s grace is enough to change this world. As Jesus teaches us to pray, “Your Kingdom come, Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.”
A cornerstone verse for our family is Mark 1:14-15
Jesus went into Galilee and proclaimed the gospel of God. 15 He said, “The time is fulfilled and the kingdom of God is near. Repent and believe the gospel!” (NET)
There are two words in this text I think are especially relevant this morning. TIME and NEAR. The New Testament was originally written in Ancient Greek. I’m no Greek scholar, but I know just enough from my seminary days to be dangerous. “TIME” in this verse is the word KAIROS. I am writing this post at 9:04AM. That is CHRONOS time. KAIROS is not bound by the clock. It is the TIME when things are brought to crisis… the right TIME. The word NEAR is a form of the verb ENGIZO It means to join one thing to another. At the RIGHT TIME, Jesus came and JOINED THE KINGDOM OF GOD with the earth. I can confidently say the Kingdom of God is a place where no one shoots up a church prayer meeting.
I refuse to let evil win the day. The right time is NOW! I want to join with God in his Kingdom Come! How about you?
How can we help restore a world that seems beyond repair?
For Michelle and me, this includes inspiring and resourcing families to put their trust in God and express their faith. Imagine how the world would be different if Jesus was at the center of every family. Imagine how the world would be different if the heart of our family practice was listening for God’s voice and responding in faith. Imagine how the world would be different if families locked arms with one another in mission. Imagine how the world would be different if families were awake to, and living life in God’s grace.
This is more than my hope. This is the very bedrock of my faith. I believe with everything I am and everything have that God has more for us than what we have settled for. Evil doesn’t get to win. The promise of abundant life (John 10:10) says something different. I choose to believe. I choose to put my active trust in God who came at the RIGHT TIME and inseparably JOINED HEAVEN AND EARTH. This is my life’s work.
Are you with me?
